Shapewear relies on elastic fibers, seams, closures and panels to maintain its shape. Improper care can accelerate wear, alter elasticity or damage fastening systems.
1. Check the care label first
Fabric composition varies by style, so the product’s care label always takes priority over general recommendations.
2. Choose a gentle wash
When the label permits it, use cold or low-temperature water and a mild detergent. Avoid aggressively wringing the garment, as this may distort elastic fibers and reinforced areas.
3. Protect hooks and zippers
Close fastening systems before washing to reduce snagging. If machine washing is allowed by the label, a delicates bag may help reduce friction.
4. Avoid excessive heat
High-temperature dryers, irons and direct heat sources can affect elastic materials. When care instructions allow, air-dry the garment in a ventilated area and avoid twisting it to speed up drying.
5. Rotate garments when possible
If you wear shapewear frequently, having more than one garment lets one wash and dry completely while you wear another. It also helps avoid rushing the same garment through repeated wash cycles.
Good care helps preserve more than appearance: it also keeps the fit and support closer to what the garment was designed to provide.
